Adventures in Catsitting

My friend has arrived back home after three weeks away and wants her cat back. So I am sad. I am going to miss that guy! He taught me something new about my relationship with cats, and I was surprised by that.

I have had a lifelong love affair with cats. I have been owned by one or more cats for most of my life. And now, I help Cats in Tow to help more cats find their forever homes. I love cats! I love their antics, their personalities, snuggle time, just having them in my home. However, I am not owned by any cats right now. I lost a very dear kitty a few years ago and these few years have meant a lot of changes in terms of living situation.

I have been contemplating warming my home with a furry presence for a while but was not sure my current space would really accommodate a cat – or two as my plan currently involves. I shared this contemplation last spring in a series of posts on this blog. If you would like to refresh your memory or are new, here is a link to the last of the series ‘Time for a New Addition’. So when my friend said she was going away for three weeks and needed a temporary home for her sweet guy, Aldi, I thought it was a great idea to have a house guest.

I have never met a cat I did not enjoy, but as I said Aldi surprised me. I will talk about the surprises and what I learned in the next few weeks. In the meantime, if anyone would like to share their stories of furry house guests, whether caring for a friend’s pet(s) or as a foster home, we would love to hear!

First Step

Three to four million.  That was an estimate from 2009-2010 of how many dogs and cats are euthanized in the U.S. Just in the U.S. If you extrapolate that to the world, the numbers are staggering. These are dogs and cats of all ages and breeds. These are dogs and cats that deserve loving homes. But the fact is that there are not enough shelters or loving homes. Shelters are overrun and there will never be enough homes for all of the unwanted pets brought to shelters and rescue organizations.

What can you do? The very first thing is to get your pets spayed and neutered.  This may sound basic, but according to the ASPCA website, only “10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered.” That means we have a long way to go in spaying and neutering our own pets and talking to our friends and families about their pets. In case you need a little more information, we at Cats in Tow has found a few good links on the myths and benefits of spaying and neutering.

Let’s get that three to four million down – spay and neuter!

Pre-adoption Spotlight: Harley (Part 2)

This week we are featuring the story of Harley, previously know as Kiki.  Harley is in our pre-adoption program and is living with a foster family until she is ready for spaying and adopting. Since Harley’s foster mom sent us some enchanting photos with the report on Harley’s first week, we thought it was a great way to talk about the Cats In Tow pre-adoption program.

Some of you may be wondering how this tiny little kitten already has two names. While this can happen when there is confusion on the sex of a kitten, Harley’s case is a matter of personality. Foster mom Kassiday came up with the suggestion, ” I was wondering if I would be able to rename Kiki to Harley. Her rambunctious personality fits it way better than Kiki. And also she… [has the] loudest purr I’ve ever heard!”

You can almost hear that engine humming when you look at this photo!

Weekend Staycation Guide

Are you thinking about heading away for the weekend but don’t have the time or the money? Maybe you just need some new ideas on how to have out-of-the-box adventures?

Well you’re in luck, because we’ve found great ways to bring the vacation right to your own home! And all with the help of Buzzfeed.

Don’t have the means to fly to Cabo? Don’t worry! These simple tips will help bring Cabo right to your doorstep.

First thing’s first, go through the motions of a regular trip. Pack a suitcase full of new, fun vacation outfits and stick to that dress code. After all, you can’t change your mind when you’re on vacation. Now’s the chance to wear that new polka dot summer dress you’ve been saving for a special occasion.

Next, you have to enjoy the sweet summer sun. So what if it’s not summer yet, that means nothing on a staycation!  Turn up the heat and wear that new bikini proud!

But the heat isn’t the only thing that’s going to bring that beach vibe home. You also need the sun rays! So open up those blinds and let that tanning lotion work its magic because you’ll be back Monday morning with the best tan in the office!

Another big part of a vacation is sleeping in a new place. Ah the beauty of hotel beds! Well who says you can’t have that experience at home too. Why not steal your roomie’s bed for a night just to get that “new bed” experience! Or pick a place you wouldn’t normally sleep. You never know what could end up being comfortable.

And who can forget the fancy bathtubs they put in hotel rooms! Now I’m sure you have a bathtub, and you always say “I should really take a bath one day, it would be so relaxing.” Well today is that day! Embrace the staycation!

But when it really comes down to it, vacations are all about the time you get to spend with that special someone. That uninterrupted, purely spiritual connection you form with another person while you’re miles away from all the worries of the real world. Now you, my friends, do not need to be hundreds of miles away to have this dream come true. All it takes is a mentality change. So shut off your phones, step away from that TV and enjoy the peace and quiet of pure happiness.

Have a happy staycation everyone!

Believe it or not, cats are a great sous chef in the kitchen! Take it from Buzzfeed. It sure seems like they know what they’re doing in the kitchen, especially when it comes to shopping and kneading.
